Water Pans?

Post by Diamondback » Sun Aug 26, 2018 12:48 am

I want to build a water pan for my 5 x 10 table, the dimensions will be 71 3/4" wide x 140" long x 5 3/4" deep. Thinking about going with 10 gauge steel, outside painted, inside left bare. As I understand it the additives for the water contain rust inhibitors so that shouldn't be a problem. Any water pans on these tables out there, and if so, any tips or advice?

Hey Dennis,

We’ve never made a Water Pan for a 5’x10’ Table like yours, but you could make one similar to the way we do pans on the 4’x8’.

Since it rests on the crossmembers of the legs, it doesn’t need to be too terribly strong. We use 14 Guage steel for the pan and it works great.

There’s a product called GreenCut that’s designed for Plasma Water Pans that is supposed to inhibit rusting. I read somewhere you can use Antifreeze also since it’s designed to inhibit rust as well.

It might be a challenge acquiring a single sheet of steel large enough to make the entire pan. You may need to make 2 halves and weld the seam.

Keep us posted on your progress!

Call if we can help with anything.

Here’s a pic of Go Fab CNC Table with a Water Pan and GreenCut.

I wonder if powder coating the inside of the pan would hold up.

I bet powder coating would do a great job protecting the Water Pan. Regular paint will work too.

The Plasma cutting process creates a fair amount of dust that gets absorbed by the water so you’ll probably still want some sort of additive in the water to prevent rusting. The water will be rusty brown the very next day after only a little cutting the day before.

That's my table!

GreenCut acts as a rust inhibitor. From the SDS it's just Propylene Glycol, which is used all over the place (food safe anti-freeze, vape juice, etc). I'm building out my circulation and filtration system now, will post pics as it comes. I just picked up a bunch of 55 gallon drums from Round Rock Honey so I can drain the table for cleaning. They're practically giving them away.

Is that a clay bird launcher under the table?
